C.C.S. Selective College Admissions Info Night

A few years ago, P.A.C.E. had Dave Dobos, who was once a member of the Columbus City Schools board, gave an excellent presentation on the ins and outs of admission to highly selective colleges. This month he is again addressing this topic, by moderating a panel of experts consisting of C.C.S. graduates willing to share their experiences in the college admissions quest. While the main focus is on the most selective colleges, the principles apply throughout the college admissions “game.”

Come and learn more about college admissions, with a panel of students moderated by Mr. Dobos.
This is recommended for families with students in grades 8 through 11.

November 2012 Meeting – School Choice and the C.C.S. Lottery System

Please join us for our November meeting:
Monday November 12, 2012 – 6:30-8:00 p.m.
at the Shepard Center, 873 Walcutt Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43219 (MAPS)

Join fellow parents of gifted students, and guests, as we discuss School Choice and the C.C.S. Lottery System.

Tonya Freeman of Columbus City Schools will join us to discuss school choice and the C.C.S. Lottery System. There are always a lot of questions surrounding the various program options in the district and there are many decisions to be made regarding the education of your identified student.

Arm yourself with the facts and get practical tips from district staff and other experienced parents to help you decide what pathway or program is right for your child. Even if this is not the year you face these decisions, it is good to be informed for advanced planning.

As always, there will be time for sharing other triumphs and concerns, as we follow our mission.

We will have child care at this meeting. Your child is welcome to bring a favorite book or game – or homework!

We are a community of parents, grandparents, guardians and families working to help gifted children shine. We know the frustrations, the joys and the intensity of raising a gifted child and we support all those who are on this difficult and wonderful journey.

The latest Flyer is available on the Resources page, in case you want to share with a friend — or make a new friend!

C.C.S. Gifted Brochures and Handouts – shared at September 2012 meeting

The Columbus City Schools resources that were shared at September meeting are available on the C.C.S. web site. (I know that with the excellent turnout we had Monday, several of you may not have been able to obtain all in which you had an interest.)

Brochures and Handouts may be found at the Gifted and Talented Department area of the Columbus City Schools web site. (Links also under “Organizations,” in right sidebar.)

Many of the brochures are on the “Parents” tab/page under “Parent Publications.” Other items of interest are elsewhere in the Gifted site.

First Meeting of 2012-2013 School Year – Monday September 10, 2012 – 6:30-8:00 p.m.

The first P.A.C.E. Meeting of School Year 2012-2013 is coming up soon!

Please join us for our September meeting:
Monday September 10, 2012 – 6:30-8:00 p.m.
at the Shepard Center, 873 Walcutt Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43219 (MAPS)

We will first get an update from key members of the Columbus City Schools Gifted and Talented staff on the implementation of the new Cluster-focused Gifted Services. This should be very helpful to parents both new and experienced in the adventure of raising a gifted child!

Then we will break into grade-level “Roundtables,” where we will have opportunity to learn more about the specifics of programs in grade levels appropriate to your children(s). Our C.C.S. Gifted and Talented educators will join with us in the discussion groups, to help answer questions and provide additional information.

We will also have information about the many programs for Gifted and Talented within the Columbus City Schools, that all can use in the Roundtable, as well as have for leisurely perusal afterward.

Come and build relationships with other parents and staff, as we strive to work together in bringing the best possible opportunities to all of our “kids>” Share your experience and hope, as well as receiving that gift from others.

Ann Sheldon of O.A.G.C. gave insightful testimony to legislators Aug 22

Ann Sheldon’s testimony (10 pages) includes information about the history of funding and regulations regarding gifted education in Ohio. There are some shocking numbers about the decline of funding and services. There are also a number of illustrative links.

P.A.C.E. Steering Retreat – Monday June 11, 2012, 7:00-9:00 p.m. @ Whetstone Rd Library Meeting Room

Dear Concerned Parents and Families:

The P.A.C.E. Steering Committee will be having our 2012-2013 Planning Retreat meeting:

Monday June 11, 2012 – 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Whetstone Rd Library Meeting Room
(3909 N. High Street Columbus, OH 43214)

MAP: http://www.columbuslibrary.org/locations/Whetstone

We will endeavor to put together a dynamite set of programs for an exciting and effective 2012-2013 program year.

The Steering Committee is a group of P.A.C.E. people including officers and others who get together to do the thinking, dreaming, planning, and working necessary to make all the good things happen at our regular meetings and events. Steering also will discuss directions for advocacy, and other very important things. One does not need to be an officer to “Steer.”

Even if you have never attended a Steering Meeting before, if you would like an opportunity to learn more, meet neat people, and help plan for a year that will benefit not only your student, but many others, consider joining us!

If you are a “shy person,” and would like a new friend to encourage you, call or send an email to me or any one of the current P.A.C.E. officers. We’ll be glad to encourage you! … If you are raring to go, and just want to let us know you are coming, also please let me know you plan to come so I can get you any important information that may be distributed in advance.

Please Join us.

Scott

Thanks to Our Gifted Teachers and Staff for Another Successful Year!

On behalf of our students and families, P.A.C.E. would like to take this opportunity to thank our Gifted and Talented teachers and staff for another great year. There are so many things that you have done, which some might call above and beyond the call of duty. Most of you simply consider these things to be your standard professional conduct.

It has always been my observation that GT teachers work the longest days – mornings through evenings. You never stop caring about our kids! My perception is that most of you aren’t doing this only as a job: your teaching is a mission, a ministry. (I observe that most teachers in general work long hours. Our GT teachers are just the most extremely dedicated!)

I urge you all to have a glorious summer. Refresh yourselves with some time for friends, family, and relaxation. And, as many of you will be engaged in continuing learning, I hope you enjoy the opportunity to learn something that will give you joy – as well as making you more rounded persons and even better teachers! I encourage you to explore things that will rekindle the excitement about learning that probably led you to want to share that excitement with students in the first place.

Thanks again!

Scott Prigan
