PACE Minutes – November 12, 2007
Meeting began at 7:05 p.m. Kathy Jackson, President, presiding
Kathy/PACE members shared the following:
Parent Fair – OAGC on Oct. 7, 8, 9 – approximately 150 parents attended from across the state; held at the Easton Hilton; included workshops, speakers. Dr. Deborah Ruf, Keynote Speaker, spoke on how the “higher” gifted children aren’t being served around the country. Kathy and Scott attended. James Webb, another Keynote Speaker mentioned how personality affects learning; overall a good experience.
PACE will not handle the OAGC membership this year.
PACE co-sponsored a Candidate’s Night at Broad Street Presbyterian Church on October 18th.
PACE members are part of a CCS School Choice Task Force, working with Elaine Bell; sharing their suggestions to the Superintendent Harris.
Summer Opportunities Fair (March) co-chaired by Andi Burnham
CCS forming a partnership with Central Tech College and Hocking College.
December 12th – Town Meeting with Dr. Bosley and Dr. Harris at East High School
Next Meeting: December 10th
No January Meeting
February – Meeting with Gifted Staff (Javitts Grant) Dr. Mary Rizza to speak of dual-identified students
Essex Program – RFP was due at the end of October; Francie is working to continue the program for 9th and 10th graders; ODE
Tonight’s Meeting Guest Speakers – School Counselors
Julie Thomas – Ridgeview Middle School
Toni Saghi – Wedgewood Middle School
Kate Webster – Columbus Alternative High School
Linda Parzero – Fort Hayes High School
Discussion included: Bullying, Transition from Elementary – Middle School – High School; Summer homework projects; Elementary Eclipse Program – challenges in Middle School. Suggestions from Counselors – Take the Next Steps; think ahead to choose the best locations (plans) for your child; parents are your child’s Biggest Advocate.
